Superfood
What makes a “superfood”? In the case of the pomegranate, its newfound status as a superfood has been cemented by a flood of recent research pointing to a wealth of health benefits derived from pomegranate-based products. Current research strongly points to pomegranates’ beneficial effects on heart disease, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, breast cancer, osteoarthritis, as well as a host of other major health concerns.

Pomegranates contain three times the antioxidant properties of red wine or green tea. In addition, pomegranates offer an abundant source of vitamins A, E and C, as well as folic acid.

The Benefits
Heart disease: Rich in antioxidants, pomegranates have been shown to help prevent the formation of bad LDL cholesterol, while lowering total cholesterol and blood pressure. This reduction in LDL cholesterol keeps arteries clear, reducing the potential of heart attacks and strokes.

Recent studies found that the consumption of one glass of pomegranate juice per day could improve blood flow to the heart, in some cases by more than a third:

Other studies found a link between regular pomegranate consumption and a reduction in the size of atherosclerotic lesions, which narrow the arteries and can cause heart failure:

Cancer: Potentially, one of the most exciting health benefits of pomegranate products is their cancer fighting properties. A 2004 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that a pomegranate extract discouraged the development of prostate cancer in mice. Pomegranates contain large amounts of flavenoids, which are a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants have been proven to be extremely effective at neutralizing cancer-promoting free radicals. Recent research has also indicated that pomegranates may be beneficial in combating breast and skin cancer, as well as leukemia.

Osteoarthritis: Exciting recent findings indicate that pomegranate extract may prevent the onset of osteoarthritis. American scientists studying the benefits of the extract found that it inhibited the formation of an enzyme responsible for causing osteoarthritis damage in human cartilage.
